The school opened in the fall of 2006 and graduated its first senior class in the spring of 2010. The school is situated on ten acres within the boundaries of Unincorporated Miami‐Dade. The school is located in a middle class residential neighborhood. The geographical situation of the school is very appealing because of its proximity to major highways and Broward County. Colleges and Universities such as Miami Dade College North Campus, Broward Community College Campus, St. Thomas University and Florida International University are within short driving distances allowing our students to enroll and participate in these settings. Our school not only offers a first class educational program, but also offers a convenient and accessible campus. Mater Lakes Academy is a comprehensive middle/ high school enrolling over 2000 students in grades 6 through 12. The student body is a diverse population composed of 92% Hispanic/Latino, 3% Black, 5% White, and 1% other.
Accreditation and Membership
Mater Lakes Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and holds memberships in the College Board, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Association of Secondary Curriculum Development.
The school’s academic program is organized on a rotating block schedule. Students are assigned seven (7) credits per year as the maximum course load; students take four classes on an alternating block schedule. The composition of the school day is composed of one 60 minute class that meets everyday followed by three 90‐minute block scheduled classes. Annual credit classes are year‐long and semesterized courses are half the year.
Advanced Placement Program courses are offered in Art History, Biology, Calculus AB, Macro Economics, English Language, English Literature, European History, Government (United States and Comparative), American History, Psychology and World History. AP Language classes offered include Spanish as well as Spanish Literature. Advanced Placement is an open‐enrollment program.
The Scholars Program enables sophomores, juniors and/or seniors to enroll in college courses and earn college credits at local institutions of higher education. The institutions that works together with Mater Lakes Academy is Miami Dade College and Florida International University. The Scholars Program aims for students to earn an Associates of Arts degree from Miami Dade College.
The school has instituted a Pre‐Advanced Placement program for its Middle Grades students. This program will give students the opportunity to experience the rigors and expectations of the Advanced Placement curriculum in preparation for High School Advanced Placement courses.

*District policy eliminated class rank beginning with the Class of 2009. Students rank is distinguished by their Grade Point Averages and the categories are separated by: Magna Cum Laude, Suma Cum Laude and Cum Laude.
Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculation
GPA is computed using the above quality points. Beginning with grade 9, all subjects, whether passed or failed, are included in the computation. A minimum of 24 credits is required for graduation. In addition to the required 24 credits, each student graduates with 28 credits which allow students to achieve higher GPA calculations and exceed both State and District requirements. AP and Dual Enrollment courses are weighed by two extra points and Honors classes are weighted by one extra point. Grades are recorded on the official transcript and grade point averages are computed in January and June.
